The weather outside may not be too delightful, but that is no reason to stay home all winter long. There are too many things to see and fun opportunities you do not want to miss. One event is the Artful Tales: Story Time in the Galleries that is held on the last Monday of each month at The Frist Center for the Visual Arts. This month, you not only get to enjoy the fun and education from story time, but you also have a chance to give back to your community.

A day at any Tennessee museum is definitely one well spent and a day at The Frist is one you should definitely enjoy. Each month, on the last Monday, children, ages three to 18-years-old, are invited to attend Artful Tales: Story Time in the Galleries. A museum educator presents a story to the children that feature elements from some of the current exhibits at the museum. The exploration of the exhibits is taken further with hands-on activities in the Martin ArtQuest Gallery at The Frist ArtStations. This is such a great way to introduce your child to the world of visual arts and promote art appreciation.

Typically, gallery admission is charged for adults who attend the last Monday event, but this time they are able to receive free admission when they bring a donation for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. The Frist Museum has offered free admission on Mondays to non-members since October 31 of this year. The offer came with the request that people make a donation to Second Harvest, which has assisted people in the community who are struggling with hunger since 1978. The mission of the not-for-profit organization is to ”feed hungry people and work to solve hunger issues in our community.” Second Harvest provides food and other products to more than 45 counties throughout Middle and West Tennessee. Some of the current donation requests are canned chicken or tuna, canned fruit or vegetables, cereal, pasta and peanut butter. Second Harvest also accepts financial donations.

The current exhibits at The Frist are:

2016 Young Tennessee Artists: Selections from Advanced Studio Programs
Samurai: The Way of the Warrior
Harmony Korine: Shadows and Loops
Ragnar Kjartansson: The Visitors

Make plans to take your children to Artful Tales: Story Time in the Galleries on Monday, December 26, at 10:30 a.m. Remember to bring your donations for Second Harvest. Call (615) 244-3340 for more information. Also, free admission is offered on Monday, December 19, with a donation.
