  • If your student is a junior (11th grader) and plans to attend college, you need to register him or her for the ACT as soon as possible.
  • They can take the test as many times as it is offered.
  • Scholarship and admission Applications are due anytime after October of the Senior year, so we recommend students take the ACT in 11th grade or early 12th grade.
  • We recommend that a student take it the first time during the Spring of their Sophomore (10th grade) year without prep or stress as a baseline test. Then you and your student will know the areas that need work.
  • Colleges and universities usually require a minimum ACT score of 21 or its SAT equivalent.
  • NOTE: HLA offers the PSAT each October. It is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship for juniors, but is recommended as a practice test for any 9th – 11th grader for either the ACT or the SAT.

  • NOTE: HLA will require a student(s) to take the ACT or SAT and submit scores to HLA prior to receiving an HLA diploma under the following circumstances:
    • Students who request an early graduation. (Prior to age 17 or in less than 4 years of high school). (This does not apply to CollegePlus students and those taking dual enrollment courses).
    • Students who are not in good academic standing, have disciplinary issues, or excessive absences upon enrolling (or returning) into HLA from another school.
    • Families with a lapse of enrollment or grade reporting.
    • Students who enter HLA as a Senior seeking a diploma from HLA.
    • At the discretion of a counselor based on the best interest of the student.
